SPIES BUGGED DIANA’S LAST CALLS

Investigators battle for secret 1,054-page phone dossier
Daily Express
27 Feb 2006

From Joanna Walters in New York and Peter Allen in Paris

AMERICAN spies are refusing to hand vital evidence to detectives investigating the death of Princess Diana.

US secret agents bugged Diana’s phone calls, including those she made hours before she was killed.

British detectives believe 1,054 pages of call transcripts, contained in 39 documents, could establish whether the security services had any involvement in her death.

But their Operation Paget inquiry has been barred from seeing the crucial dossier.

It includes details of phone calls made just before the crash by Henri Paul, the chauffeur who died along with the Princess and her lover Dodi Fayed in Paris in August 1997.

TARGET: Diana’s phone calls were recorded on the night of the fatal crash

The inquiry, headed by former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Stevens, wants to know Mr Paul’s exact movements between the crucial hours of 7pm and 10pm that night.

MI6 agents are understood to have kept a discreet watch on Diana and asked their colleagues in the US intelligence services to eavesdrop on her calls using their highly sophisticated surveillance equipment.

But repeated attempts to force the US authorities to release the documents have
been vetoed by both the CIA and sister body the National Security Agency. British detectives have already confirmed that

Diana was using a mobile phone just before the crash, which raises the prospect that her final conversations are detailed in the files.

When questioned, US officials said they had been monitoring the calls for their own purposes. They claimed to be interested in a friend of Diana, Lucia Flecha de Lima, wife of the former Brazilian ambassador to London.

Dodi’s father Mohamed Al Fayed has also been refused access to the files after he applied to see them under the US Freedom of Information Act.

The Harrods boss was initially granted access by the US District Court but then had it withdrawn. He believes that British agents murdered Diana and Dodi, then arranged a cover-up to make it look like an accident.

Diana’s conversations with Dodi and Dodi’s conversations with Mr Paul had been secretly recorded because of MI6’s interest in her significance to the monarchy.

At the time, she was no longer part of the Royal Household and had declined Scotland Yard protection, but her relationship to Princes William and Harry meant they had to take an interest.

However, the CIA was asked to carry out the surveillance as its satellite spy system was much more sophisticated than anything operated by the British. A source close to the inquiry said: “It is our firm belief that highly sensitive material is available which could prove a lot of things.

“This satellite can pick up almost anything that’s going on in the world but clearly it can take years to get this kind of material into the public domain as it is highly classified.”

PRINCESS: MI6 ‘kept discreet watch’

The Diana papers are shielded from having to be disclosed, even under the Freedom of Information Act.

John Pike, of US intelligence consultancy Global Security, said: “It’s not at all incredible that they were eavesdropping on Diana.

“In their papers they would have a lot of stuff about her, monitoring of conversations where she was discussed because of concerns for her safety.”

Meanwhile, security sources in France claim that Mr Paul, 41, deputy security manager at Mr Al Fayed’s Paris Ritz hotel, was a French agent.

Part of Operation Paget has centred on whether MI6 had any dealings with Mr Paul. There are claims that the chauffeur was an MI6 “asset” and a freelance “spy for hire” for foreign intelligence agencies.

Investigators have been told he also worked for the French. Mr Paul is said to have been on the payroll of DST, France’s domestic security agency, and the British team has demanded access to its “agent handling” files.

At the time of his death, the relatively low-paid Mr Paul was found to control secret accounts containing more than £100,000, spread across 14 banks.

Sources believe that he could have been speaking to a security service “handler” immediately before the fatal crash, which is why the Operation Paget officers are also so keen to see the US transcripts.

One source said: “We know he was working for the French secret service, and the French have got to give us access to the records of what he was doing. It’s an issue. We want to know where he was and what he was doing.”

The Daily Express has already revealed how French authorities have been accused of repeatedly stalling the investigation and are in a “blind panic” at being forced by a European court ruling to answer key questions about the fatal crash and its aftermath

1. Why would anybody bother spying on Diana - I really don't understand.

2. They will never get those transcripts.

Lets face it Diana was never left alone was she? She couldn't do anything or go anywhere without it being reported.

Yeah, its a shame that Diana will never be left alone. I feel for her. She think she was safe in America than UK but looked like she was wrong. she was being spied on in both countires. Its a shame but it made you think again, was her death was a tragic accident?
