Princess Buy-ana
By Meredith Moss

Dayton Daily News

I didn't see a glass slipper but there is a tiny silver one, and there's also a hand-embroidered wedding shoe ornament.

In honor of the exhibit "Diana, A Celebration," Dayton Art Institute's two gift shops are filled with dozens of items fit for a princess.

It isn't often we can be certain "exclusive" really means "exclusive," but that's the case with the official Diana store merchandise that was commissioned specifically for this exhibit by Diana's brother, Charles Spencer.

It's a lovely collection of delicate mementoes beautifully displayed in glass cases that have come from England. The color scheme is pink and a Tiffany blue that's been adapted from the color of one of Diana's gowns. Many of the items are silver. Prices range from $11 to $199. The packaging and shopping bags are pretty, too.

The commemorative collection includes dainty jewelry and bone china ranging from a pill box to a platinum-edged plate. Many items incorporate the Spencer family's Althorp Estate crest; others include a pink rose. There are coin purses and tiara note cards, pens and key rings, picture frames and mugs. The charm bracelet includes charms that represent Diana — a rose, a tiny handbag, a heart.

Fiona Sale, who designed all of the products, was here from England for the exhibit opening and said the only likeness of Diana on the products is the silhouette taken from the "temple" at the end of the Round Oval Lake where Diana is buried.

"The big thing is that 10 percent of all sales go to the Princess of Wales Memorial Fund," Sale explained.

Shoppers — especially those with little girls — will want to check out the regular Museum Store where manager Diane Haskell has assembled a selection of Princess-related and English items. You'll find assortments of tea, coffee table art books on Diana and cute princess piggy banks.

There's a teapot night light, tiaras for both adults and children and pens with a frog prince. Little girls can buy a kit and make their own princess mirror, crown and tiara.

The cute tiara rings are just $3.75.

There is also a collection of Princess Diana reproduction jewelry made of cubic zirconium and Swarovski crystals, including her engagement ring ($75) and the choker ($159) that she wore with her famous black Travolta dress at the White House reception in her honor.

The shops are open during museum hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and until 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. To call the Diana shop, dial 224-0392. The Museum Store number is 223-5277, ext. 130.
