‘Pull the plug on tribute fountain’
Daily Express
13 Mar 2006

By Mark Reynolds

THE Diana Memorial Fountain could be scrapped altogether after being plagued by problems, it emerged last night.

This week a report will be published by the Commons Public Accounts Committee, which has investigated the fiasco surrounding the water feature in London’s Hyde Park.

It is expected to deliver a damning assessment, prompting further calls for the feature to be junked.

Opened by the Queen in July 2004 as a “permanent tribute to the Princess of Wales”, the oval stone fountain has been dogged by disaster from the start. It has had to close three times with design problems and has cost millions of pounds more than planned.

Fifteen people were injured after slipping on the wet granite in the first two weeks, prompting £700,000 of enhancement works after it was deemed unsafe for paddling children. Since then it has cost the taxpayer £5,247,366 – £2.2million more than planned, and will continue to cost £250,000 a year to run – £100,000 over budget.

UNVEILING DAY: Visitors sit and cool their feet in the Princess’s fountain soon after it opened on July 6 2004

In November the committee described it as a “balls-up”, a “huge waste of public money”, and said it resembled “a complete bog and an open drain outside Heathrow Airport”.

Dame Sue Street, permanent secretary of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which contributed £3,862,800 to the project, refused to accept it had been a “fiasco” but admitted they had underestimated the number of visitors. She said: “In the first few days we were getting 5,000 visitors an hour, and that was an extraordinary load on a site no bigger than a football pitch.

“Of course you might say we should have foreseen it but the way it was used, the coachloads of children who arrived in swimming trunks when there was a lido very near, was not what had been envisaged for a place of contemplation and enjoyment.”

I never approved of this. Complete waste of money! Especially people's money. A life-like status of Diana would have be a lot better and a lot less problematic and I would think that could cost less money in a long term to look after it. To be honest, I was horrified when they were planning to build the fountain of Diana's memory. I thought that was very appalling. Maybe you think differently but maybe I had a high expectation. I always believe the best way to remember Diana is a status of herself somewhere in London where she will be forever remembered. Fountain will not last, in other word, Diana will be forgotten sooner than later. The problem with the organsations (To them, it's all about C.A.S.H) is they don't listen to us (They are so divvies as Diana is people princess!) and unfortunately, tonned and tonned of cash gone down the drain. Disguising! Evil or Very Mad
