Hepburn 'unforgettable' in little black dress

Hollywood legend Audrey Hepburn has been chosen as the most unforgettable wearer of the "little black dress" (LBD), a survey showed today.

Her appearance in Givenchy in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany`s put her ahead of style icons such as Diana, Princess of Wales and Liz Hurley.

But Diana was the only woman to make it into the top 10 for two separate occasions when her dresses stole the limelight.

The princess made it to second spot for the outfit she wore as her husband the Prince of Wales was making a televised confession to adultery in June 1994.

As the programme went on air, Diana made her own splash by going to a party at London`s Serpentine Gallery in an off-the-shoulder black chiffon evening dress by Christina Stambolian.

Meanwhile, her appearance in a black strapless dress, as photographed by Mario Testino shortly before her death, made it to number seven in today`s list.

In third was Liz Hurley`s tight-fitting Valentino dress held together with safety pins, as worn to the 1994 premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral, which starred her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant.

The survey was conducted to mark the 80th anniversary of the very first little black dress, designed by Coco Chanel in 1926.

It found 96% of women in the UK now own one while 54% of men said it was their favourite outfit on a woman. Some 99% of women thought black was the most slimming colour they could wear.

The poll of 1,023 men and women in Manchester and London was conducted on behalf of event organisers Little Black Dress.

A spokeswoman said: "From the classic sophistication of Chanel to the raunchy come-and-get-it allure of Versace, the beauty of the little black dress is that it really is all things to all women.

"Women love wearing them, men love women in them and there just is nothing quite as glamorous as an LBD for that special occasion."

Here is the top 10 list of people`s "most unforgettable little black dress of all time":

1. Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany`s in a dress by Givenchy
2. Princess Diana in the Christina Stambolian she wore to the Serpentine Gallery as her husband was confessing on television to adultery
3. Liz Hurley`s Valentino dress at the Four Weddings and a Funeral premiere
4. Julia Roberts` vintage Valentino at the Oscars
5. Nicole Kidman in Chanel in the Chanel No5 perfume advert
6. The Roland Mouret Galaxy dress as worn by Cameron Diaz
7. Princess Diana in a black strapless dress, as photographed by Mario Testino shortly before her death
8. Victoria Beckham`s trademark little Gucci dress as worn during her time as "Posh Spice" in the Spice Girls and the film Spice World
9. Charlotte Church in her plunging back dress by Roberto Cavalli at the GQ Woman of the Year awards
10. Anita Ekberg`s gravity defying-dress, designed by the Fontana sisters and worn in the famous Trevi fountain scene in the 1960 film La Dolce Vita

Not a surprise as Diana always looked good at anything but especially at this little black one as it was sexy without over the top.
