Diana was a card
Cheeky birthday greetings sent by Princess go under hammer
Daily Express Weekend
19 Mar 2006

By Camilla Tominey

UNIQUE insights into Princess Diana’s mischievous sense of humour are about to be revealed in a sale of some of her most intimate gifts.

JOKER: The Princess was full of fun, says Dalton

Items going under the hammer in America include a card poking fun at her mother-in-law the Queen and at former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Another card – believed to have been sent to her personal protection officer Ken Wharfe on his birthday – features a naked woman on the front with a lewd message inside.

The memorabilia are being sold by the late Princess of Wales’s former hairdresser Richard Dalton, who created the famous short style which gained worldwide attention in 1984.

Diana, who was killed in a 1997 Paris car crash following her divorce from Prince Charles, sent Dalton the cheeky monarch/Maggie card with the message
“To Richard, Happy, happy birthday, with love from Diana.”

It features a caricature of the Queen, while inside is a cartoon of Lady Thatcher doing the vacuuming in a pair of boxer shorts and a bra. It reads: “I see London, I see France, I see Maggie in her underpants.”

ROYAL PRANK: The mischievous card Diana sent to her hairdresser Richard Dalton. It will be auctioned in America on March 31

The Princess’s card to ex-police inspector Mr Wharfe, who later wrote a book about the six years he spent guarding Diana and her sons, promises: “Your birthday present is dinner in any London restaurant of your choice for two and I foot the bill!”

Mr Dalton – now based in Los Angeles – spent nearly 10 years tending her hair almost every day until 1991. He told the Sunday Express: “I will always treasure all the memories I have of Diana, but the keepsakes were sat in a case in a vault and I felt it was time for someone else to enjoy them.

“I have held on to a lot of the personal correspondence. She had a very cheeky side and was always sending cards like the Maggie in her underwear one. Even on flights to Australia she would get up and play some great tricks. She was full of fun. We went through a lot together.”

The March 31 auction is expected to raise around £17,000. Joseph Maddalena, owner of Beverly Hills auctioneers Profiles In History, said: “It provides a unique insight into what Diana was really like.”
