Brother stages tribute charity bash
2 May 2006
ALMOST nine years after Princess Diana’s death, Earl Spencer is to throw open her ancestral home this summer to fund a cause his sister once wanted to help. It will be the first big charity event Charles Spencer has staged at Althorp, where his sister is buried, since being criticised over a pop concert he held to raise money for the Diana memorial fund eight years ago.
The ‘Russian midsummer fantasy’ will support a child cancer fund set up by the late Raisa Gorbachev, who was the wife of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
Diana met Mikhail Gorbachev in 1996 and learned at first hand of the plight of Russian children diagnosed with terminal cancer. She had earlier paid a visit to a Moscow hospital.
Shortly before her death, Diana revealed that her ambition was to open a network of hospices across the world, including the former Soviet Union.
The Gorbachevs, along with Aeroflot boss Evgeny Lebedev, will host the event which is backed by Madonna, Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and Tatler editor Geordie Greig.
‘It’s terrific that Lord Spencer has agreed to allow us to hold the party at Althorp,’ an organiser tells me, ‘because the event is so in tune with the kind of charity fund-raising that Diana was associated with.’
Around 300 people are expected to attend a lavish dinner and concert with surprise guests at Althorp on June 10.
Diana, Princess of Wales is and always will be The People's Princess.
