Princess’s body was illegally embalmed to cover up pregnancy
‘The embalming of Diana broke the law. It begs many questions’
Daily Express
7 May 2006

From Martin Evans in Paris

DRAMATIC new evidence emerged last night that the body of Diana, Princess of Wales, was embalmed on the orders of panicking British officials.

The controversial process, which broke French law, was carried out just two hours before she was flown back to Britain.

The embalming masked any indication as to whether Diana was pregnant when she died.

The Daily Express has learned that hurried discussions between British and French officials were held to make sure that embalming went ahead before the Princess’s body was flown home. It had always been understood that Diana’s body had been embalmed in the chaotic hour immediately after her death early on Sunday, August 31, 1997.

But sources close to the investigation into Diana’s death told the Daily Express that the process did not take place until seven hours later as officials prepared to fly the body to Britain, where a full post mortem was due to be held.

This evidence will increase pressure on the official inquiry headed by Lord Stevens to ascertain whether the embalming was part of a hasty cover-up to hide Diana’s pregnancy.

NEW EVIDENCE: Diana’s body was embalmed in Paris seven hours later than originally believed

They will want to examine the role played by Sir Michael Jay, then British ambassador in Paris and now head of the Diplomatic Service. He took responsibility for bringing Diana’s body to Britain after the Princess died at the Pitie Salpetriere hospital.

Sir Michael is said to have consulted Government officials in London and senior aides to the Royal Family at Balmoral, where the Queen, Prince Charles and Princes William and Harry were staying.

A source said: “This is a major development which calls into question the official version of events and has massive implications for the French and British authorities.

“The revelation that the embalming process took place a full seven hours later than we had originally been told will increase the pressure on Lord Stevens to clarify what happened that night and clear up once and for all this string of shadowy irregularities.”

BOYFRIEND: Dodi died with Diana

Mohamed Al Fayed, Dodi’s father, has always maintained that his son and Diana were murdered by the British authorities because she was pregnant.

He has also always insisted there were irregularities over the embalming, in which the powerful chemical formaldehyde is injected into the arteries.

The preserving process was illegal under French law because Diana was due to undergo a post mortem in Britain just a few hours later.

Suspicions of a cover-up were raised because officials would have known that Diana’s body was to be embalmed after the post mortem. Critics want to know why there was such urgency for the French to carry out the procedure.

Daily Express August 16, 2004

In January, Mr Al Fayed launched legal action in the French courts over the irregularities. In what is seen as a key victory to discover the truth, he has won an appeal. This will be heard in the Inquiry Chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal on May 29. A source close to the inquiry said: “This is another massive breakthrough in efforts to discover the truth.”

Sir Michael Jay is also expected to be interviewed again by the Lord Stevens inquiry team.

According to sources in Paris, after taking advice from Government and Royal officials, Sir Michael consulted Madame Maude Coujard, the most senior public prosecutor in the French capital. She, in turn, instructed Professor Dominique Lecomte, head of the Paris Institute of Forensic Medicine, to carry out the embalming.

The French authorities must now reveal exactly what happened to Diana’s body.

Diana and Dodi had told close friends that they were going to make an announcement on Monday, September 1. But they died 24 hours before they could tell the world.

TRAGIC HOMECOMING: Diana’s coffin is carried off an aircraft at Northolt as the nation mourned in shock and, below right, the Princess

Diana had also hinted to reporters that she was planning an announcement which would shock everyone. She told journalists: “You are going to get a big surprise with the next thing I do. You’ll see. But you will have to be patient.”

Experts have told the Daily Express that the formaldehyde fluid used in the embalming process corrupts pregnancy tests, which may give a “false positive” reading. This meant that any later pregnancy test would be immediately rendered worthless.

Experts believe that embalming also corrupts DNA tests, so the identity of the father of any baby Diana might have been carrying could never be verified. Significantly, the body of Dodi was not embalmed.

His family were, apparently, told by doctors that it was not necessary to preserve his body because of the short journey time between the French hospital and British mortuary.

The official French inquiry, led by Judge Herve Stephan, ignored the pregnancy rumours and concluded that Diana and Dodi were killed when their driver, Henri Paul, who was said to be three times of the drink-drive limit, crashed.

But conspiracy theories have been lent weight from several sources. A senior French policeman claims he saw medical papers showing Diana was pregnant.

There was also evidence that the CIA had been monitoring Diana’s calls and passed on more than 150 pages of documents to British intelligence.

On the night of the crash a leading French secret service figure was seen speaking to Henri Paul and blood samples indicating he had been high on drink and drugs have allegedly gone missing. All this means that questions surrounding Diana’s death are unlikely to go away.

A source close to the investigation said: “The fact that the unusual and illegal process of embalming took place less than two hours before the Princess was flown back begs a number of questions.”

Mr Al Fayed said: “This is the biggest breakthrough yet in my quest to discover the truth. I have always maintained that my son and Diana were murdered. I will be proved right.”

So if that is true then she might have been pregnant but I would not be surprise if they won't confirm this as it may embarressment the Royal Family.
